The Soundtrack of the Season
Starting in November, Christmas music plays everywhere—grocery stores, malls, restaurants, even gas stations. For my daughter with autism and auditory sensitivities, the repetitive songs, loud volumes, and inescapable nature of Christmas music becomes genuinely distressing.
Why Christmas Music Is Overwhelming
- Repetitive songs heard dozens of times daily
- Loud volume in public spaces
- Can’t escape it—plays everywhere you go
- Combines with other store noises (crowds, announcements)
- Some songs have jarring elements (bells, drums, sudden volume changes)
- Auditory processing makes it hard to filter as background noise
Coping with Unavoidable Christmas Music
- Noise-canceling headphones in public. Essential tool for December outings.
- Shop during early morning hours. Some stores don’t play music first thing in the morning.
- Use online shopping to avoid stores entirely. No stores = no Christmas music exposure.
- Keep trips brief. Get in and out quickly to minimize exposure.
- Warn her before entering. “This store will have Christmas music playing.”
- Bring earplugs as backup. If headphones are too heavy or hot.
Christmas Music at Home
At home, we have control:
Don’t play Christmas music just because it’s December
If we do play it, keep volume low
Choose calmer instrumental versions, not bombastic renditions
Limit to short periods, not all day long
Ask permission before playing it
Respect “no” if she doesn’t want it on
Alternatives to Traditional Christmas Music
Quiet instrumental holiday music
Nature sounds or white noise
Her preferred music (doesn’t have to be Christmas-themed)
Silence—Christmas doesn’t require a soundtrack

Not Everyone Loves Christmas Music
It’s okay to find Christmas music overwhelming rather than delightful. Noise-canceling headphones, strategic shopping, and control over home environment make December’s musical onslaught more tolerable.
