Thanksgiving Sleepover at Relatives: Preparing for Overnight Stays

Sleeping Away From Home

Sometimes Thanksgiving involves sleeping at a relative’s house. For my daughter with autism, sleeping in an unfamiliar bed, different sounds, new smells, and disrupted bedtime routines can make sleep nearly impossible.

Overnight Stay Challenges

  • Unfamiliar bed and bedding
  • Different sounds (creaking house, unfamiliar noises)
  • Different smells
  • Disrupted bedtime routine
  • Lack of control over environment (temperature, darkness, noise)
  • Anxiety about sleeping away from home

Making Overnight Stays Manageable

  • Bring her own pillow and blanket. Familiar items make the strange bed feel safer.
  • Pack her stuffed animals and comfort items. Everything that helps her sleep at home goes with her.
  • Do the same bedtime routine. Same order, same activities, just in a different location.
  • Bring white noise machine or app. Masks unfamiliar house sounds.
  • Request a quiet room away from activity. Not next to the living room or kitchen.
  • Consider staying in a hotel instead. Sometimes a hotel room is more predictable than a relative’s guest room.
  • Have an exit plan. Be prepared to go home if she can’t sleep.

When Sleepovers Aren’t Worth It

If overnight stays cause significant distress and sleep deprivation that affects her for days, it’s okay to drive home after Thanksgiving dinner instead of sleeping over. Sleep and regulation matter more than tradition.

Sleep Is Non-Negotiable

Kids on the spectrum need quality sleep for regulation. If sleepovers at relatives compromise sleep, choose alternatives that prioritize rest over tradition.
