Black Friday and Crowds: Autism-Friendly Shopping Alternatives

When Shopping Day Follows Thanksgiving

Black Friday—the day after Thanksgiving—brings massive crowds, sensory chaos, and shopping frenzy. For my daughter with autism, Black Friday stores are nightmare environments: fluorescent lights, loud announcements, pushy crowds, and overwhelming stimulation everywhere.

Why We Skip Black Friday Shopping

  • Massive crowds with people pushing and rushing
  • Loud music and PA announcements
  • Bright fluorescent lighting
  • Long lines and wait times
  • Overstimulating store displays
  • Unpredictable environment

Autism-Friendly Alternatives

Online shopping: All the deals, none of the crowds. Shop from home in pajamas.
Small Business Saturday: Smaller stores, fewer people, calmer environment.
Off-peak shopping: If you must shop in person, go early morning or late evening when stores are quieter.
Skip it entirely: Black Friday shopping isn’t mandatory. Stay home and rest after Thanksgiving.

If You Must Go to Stores

  • Bring sensory tools. Noise-canceling headphones are essential.
  • Set a strict time limit. “We’re shopping for 30 minutes, then leaving.”
  • Have a specific plan. Know exactly what stores and items, no browsing.
  • Provide sensory breaks. Sit in the car between stores.
  • Allow early exit. If it’s too much, leave immediately.

Black Friday Is Optional

There’s no rule that says you must brave Black Friday crowds. Online shopping and alternative days provide the same deals without sensory overwhelm. Choose what works for your child.
