A real parent’s journey helping her daughter with reading

Week 1 was all about phonics — and she crushed it. So now what?
Week 2 is where we start building on that foundation. We’re moving from sounds and blending into sentences, vocabulary, and word structure. It’s a big shift, but she’s ready.
Here’s what Week 2 looks like:

A. Sentence Architect — 10 minutes a day (3 days)This is where she practices writing 5-7 complex sentences, focusing on descriptive language.
The cool thing about Sentence Architect? She can use the word bank to build sentences (and the verbs get conjugated correctly for her), or she can type her own sentence from scratch.
It’s scaffolded support when she needs it, freedom when she doesn’t.
(Check out our [Sentence Architect step-by-step guide] for a full walkthrough)

B. Flashcard Drill — 5 minutes a day
Quick and simple. She reviews the vocabulary words she learned in Week 1 using flashcards.
Five minutes. That’s it. But it makes a huge difference for reinforcing memory.
The key is consistency — a little bit every day keeps the words fresh.

C. Morphology Builder — 3 exercises
This is one of my favorites.
She’s learning to identify prefixes and suffixes — the building blocks of words. Once she understands how words are put together, she can decode new words on her own.
It’s like giving her the keys to unlock vocabulary instead of memorizing word by word.
(Check out our [Morphology Builder step-by-step guide] to see how it works)

D. Reading Conversation Buddy — 20 minutes a day
Okay, I’ll be honest — this one wasn’t in the original plan. I added it myself.
After seeing how much momentum she built in Week 1, I didn’t want to lose it. The Reading Buddy lets her have conversations about what she’s reading — exploring themes, making predictions, and using all that new vocabulary she’s learning.
And it’s working. Her conversations have gotten so much better. She’s using words I didn’t even know she knew.

A Note on Honesty and Transparency
I want to keep it real with you.
As amazing as she’s doing at home — and even in quizzes at school — something happens when it’s time for a real test. Her brain freezes.
She knows the material. She’s proven it over and over. But when that test paper hits her desk, it’s like everything disappears.
I just requested a meeting with her case manager at school to talk about it. We need to figure out what’s going on and find ways to support her. Maybe it’s test anxiety. Maybe she needs accommodations. I don’t know yet.
But I’m not going to pretend everything is perfect. This journey has wins AND challenges. That’s the reality.

To the Parents Reading This
If you’re here, you’re probably going through something similar. Maybe your child struggles with reading. Maybe it’s math. Maybe it’s focus, or anxiety, or something you can’t even name yet.
I see you. This stuff is hard. Some days feel like breakthroughs. Other days feel like you’re starting over. And it’s exhausting to fight for your child — at school, at home, everywhere.
But here’s what I’ve learned: progress isn’t a straight line. It’s messy. It’s slow. And sometimes you can’t even see it until you look back.

Your child is trying. You are trying. And that matters more than any test score.
We’re all figuring this out together — one day at a time, one small win at a time. You’re not alone in this.
Keep going. Your child is lucky to have you in their corner. What’s Next?
